Bialowieza Forest in Poland is one of the last large tracts of the primeval woodlands that once carpeted northern Europe. It is currently being systematically felled, in defiance of EU edicts to stop the clearance.
The 21 April 2017 will surely go down in history as the first day since 1882, that no coal was used in a UK power station to supply electricity. National Grid confirmed that it went a whole 24 hour period without using coal as part of its energy mix. With all coal stations due to be phased out by 2025 this event is likely to become more frequent and renewables will become a greater part of the generation mix.
