Renewables Generation Increases

Renewables share of generation in Q1 2017 was 26.6%. Clean power generated a record 24.8 terrawatt-hours (TWh) out of total generation of 93.2TWh. Renewables capacity in the UK reached 36.9GW, up 12% on the previous year.

HMRC Inheritance Tax take soars above £5 billion for the first time

In the year to May 2017, inheritance tax (IHT) collected by HMRC rose by 9% on the previous year, from £4.7 billion to £5.1 billion. The number of family estates subject to IHT has quadrupled since 2010, from 10,000 to 40,000. An investment in UK commercial forestry provides 100% from IHT, after two years of ownership. Some renewable energy investments also qualify for IHT relief.

The 21 April 2017 will surely go down in history as the first day since 1882, that no coal was used in a UK power station to supply electricity. National Grid confirmed that it went a whole 24 hour period without using coal as part of its energy mix. With all coal stations due to be phased out by 2025 this event is likely to become more frequent and renewables will become a greater part of the generation mix.
