UK Imports of timber increased 5% in 2016 to 5.7 million cubic metres. Main suppliers were Sweden (2.5 million cubic metres, 44%), Latvia (850,000 cubic metres, 15%) and Finland (787,000 cubic metres, 14%).
The imports comprised 3.8 million cubic metres of rough-sawn softwood lumber (+5%) and planed – product imports of 1.9 million cubic metres (+4%).
The rise in imports serviced the growing output in the construction sector, as house starts continued on an upward trend. FIM expect both total consumption and imports of softwood lumber to rise further in 2017.
